Handyman Business

It might sound old-fashioned, but a handyman or home maintenance business can be just the right solution for the busy family. When customers just don’t have time to get to those little problems around the house, they need someone who can do the work for them at a reasonable price. And that’s how you can make money.

If you’re already fairly competent at handling basic repairs, being a home maintenance person can be a great way to make money. You just start by estimating the time that a job might take, estimate the costs involved, and complete the project. Not only is your work instantly rewarding, but the family that wanted to do the job and couldn’t gets a little free time in return.

What you need

Unlike other home businesses, handyman businesses will need a lot of equipment to start. But you can avoid spending a large amount at first and wait until you begin to make money. Start with the basic tools: hammers, wrenches, nails, screws, and screwdrivers. And as the jobs get more complicated, you can purchase more complicated tools.

You will also want a professional looking uniform to look the part around the job site as well. The way you make money in this business is to show that you think all jobs are important to complete.

In the beginning, you need to figure out what kinds of jobs you will be doing to make money. Try to have a broad range of items that can even include outdoor repairs and construction. Some handymen like to help with building decks or other outdoor structures when the busy family can not do it on their own.

As you determine the duties that you can do, try to have a range of time that the job can be completed in. This will allow you to see if charging hourly or by the job is more likely to make money and keep customers coming to you. Little jobs should not cost as much because they won’t take as much time in most cases.

Start with a few advertisements around the home improvement stores or grocery stores. This is where families are going for their projects or on a regular basis, so making sure that your name is there to greet them is the perfect way to make money for your business.

Growing over time

As you increase the items that you can do for your home handyman business, you may even be able to branch out into business repairs and construction as well. But start slowly so that you learn what you can do and how well you can do it.

You might find that working with a carpenter or a plumber or electrician can help you learn more skills to make money that you might have been missing out on. Take the time to learn as much as you can so that you’re as versatile as possible. If you can go to classes at your local home improvement store, that’s great. Or you might be able to take community classes to learn the basics of fixtures or other repair issues.

You can also use other skills that you have to do minor fixes that a family may not have noticed, but at no extra charge. This will make money because of the good service that you have provided and that the customer will share with others.

You can make money by being a handyman, but you’re helping to give the customer a better home without taking up their precious time. And that’s actually what you’re trying to sell—an easier way for families to do everything that they want to do.
